The Process
The design is first drawn on paper and then transferred to the copper sheet which is then shaped using repoussé and chasing. Once the larger component parts of the statue have been shaped, details such as ornaments and haloes are carefully added. Large statues are mounted on a hollow wooden frame to give form and support, and later filled with sacred scriptures and medicinal substances before the image is consecrated. Small parts of statues are made using a sand-casting process, during which molten copper is poured into moulds filled with sand. These moulded parts are carefully finished. Finally, all the pieces of the statue are gilded and polished before assembly. |
